Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifier, as the name suggests, removes humidity in the air. Rather than a luxury, it is a vital appliance in many homes, especially those along the coast. This is because, high levels of moisture in the air, can accelerate the growth of fungus and mold in the house. This could lead to health issues, discomfort, wear-and-tear of clothes, spoiling of food etc. Humid atmosphere also facilitates the thriving of insects like cockroaches and flea.

There are various kinds of dehumidifiers. The method of dehumidifying employed differs based on climatic conditions. There are separate kinds for hot and cold climates. Then again, there are those that are specially designed for industries.

Hot Climates:-

Certain dehumidifiers, use the same principle as the refrigerator. A gaseous substance is compressed into liquid state and passed through metallic coils. When air is passed over this coil, the moisture in it condenses and is sent out through an outlet.

The air-conditioner used for cooling the room, serves two purposes. Apart from reducing air temperatures, it also plays the part of a dehumidifier. When air is taken in for cooling, the moisture in it condenses. While the older ACs, simply allow this water to drip out, the newer ones use the heat generated within the gadget, for evaporation of this water. This is then expelled using a fan.

Cold Climates:-

In regions with cold climate, desiccants like silica gel is used in dehumidifiers, to absorb the moisture in the air.

Certain air-conditioners, are designed to remove moisture from the air, and send the same air back into the room. Thus reducing humidity and also keeping the room warm.

Industries:-

Apart from households, these appliances are also used in industries for maintaining the right humidity levels. Electronic dehumidifiers are employed in such instances. The Peltier effect is employed, to create a hot and a cold junction. The cold junction usually faces the chamber, where the moisture will condense and be expelled. The heat generated is either expelled or used for other purposes.
